GHK-Cu is a tripeptide — glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine — that binds copper(II) with high affinity. It occurs naturally in human plasma, and plasma levels decline with age.
It is one of the most heavily marketed compounds in the peptide space, which makes it one of the most misrepresented. This guide separates what has been demonstrated from what is simply repeated.
What GHK-Cu actually is
Established evidence
GHK was first isolated from human plasma in the early 1970s. The sequence is glycine–histidine–lysine, and the histidine imidazole and terminal amine form a binding site that holds a copper(II) ion. The copper complex is what is normally referred to as GHK-Cu.
Plasma GHK concentration is reported to fall substantially between early adulthood and later life. That observation is well established; what it means functionally is not the same question.
What the research shows
Preclinical research
The bulk of the GHK-Cu literature is in vitro and animal work: gene-expression profiling, fibroblast and collagen studies, and wound-healing models in rodents. In those models GHK-Cu is reported to modulate a broad set of genes associated with tissue remodelling.
Human data is thinner and concentrated in topical cosmetic studies with small sample sizes and short durations. There is no body of controlled human trials supporting systemic use, and none supporting treatment of any medical condition.
Claims that outrun the data
Unproven claim
Statements that GHK-Cu reverses ageing, regenerates organs, resets gene expression in humans or repairs specific tissue in people are not supported by human evidence. They generalise cell-culture gene-expression findings far beyond what those studies can carry.

Handling in the laboratory
GHK-Cu is supplied lyophilised and is characteristically deep blue in solution — the colour comes from the copper complex. Keep unopened vials cold, dry and out of light; once reconstituted, refrigerate and protect from light.
Copper complexes are sensitive to pH and to certain diluents. Use bacteriostatic water for multi-draw work and record the reconstitution date on the vial.

- Reconstituted: 2–8 °C, amber or opaque storage
- Never shake — swirl until dissolved
- Log compound, concentration and date on every vial
