The Costa del Sol is a good place to train seriously — a long outdoor season, sea-level roads, the sierra for climbing, and cycling and running communities that operate year-round.
The limiting factor is not motivation or facilities. It is heat management and the discipline to periodise around it.
Treat the calendar as three blocks. Autumn to spring is your window for peak volume and hard intensity, with comfortable temperatures and stable conditions. Early summer is for heat acclimatisation. Deep summer is a maintenance and technique block, with sessions at dawn or after sunset.
Heat acclimatisation takes roughly one to two weeks of consistent exposure and genuinely improves performance in the heat — plasma volume rises, sweating starts earlier. It is worth doing on purpose rather than suffering through it.
Heart rate rises for the same pace in heat and humidity, so pace-based targets misprice the effort. In summer, run to effort or heart rate, not to pace, and accept slower splits without adding sessions to compensate.
Track a small number of things you will actually review monthly. Everything else is noise.
