Living well

Healthy Living in Marbella

Health outcomes are mostly the sum of ordinary days. Marbella's advantage is that several of the inputs with good evidence behind them are simply available by default here.

The task is to build a week that does not depend on discipline.

Daily defaults worth building

Each of these is low effort, and each has reasonable supporting evidence for long-term health.

  • Morning daylight within an hour of waking — a walk on the paseo counts
  • Walking as transport, which is realistic in central Marbella and San Pedro
  • Two or three strength sessions a week, kept short enough to be repeatable
  • A consistent sleep and wake time, including at weekends
  • Regular in-person social contact, which tracks with longevity as strongly as most health behaviours

The Mediterranean pattern, described accurately

The dietary pattern studied in trials such as PREDIMED is vegetable-heavy, with legumes, fish, nuts, olive oil as the main fat, moderate dairy, little red or processed meat and little added sugar. It is not paella, fried fish and late-night wine — and the beach-bar version of Andalusian eating is a different thing from the researched pattern.

Locally this is easy: markets, fresh fish, legumes, seasonal vegetables and good olive oil are ordinary supermarket items. Add adequate protein at each meal, which the traditional pattern is often light on for anyone training or over 50.

What quietly works against you here

Three things account for most of the damage: routine alcohol as social default, dinners at 22:00 that compress sleep, and a car-based life in the urbanizaciones outside town that removes incidental movement.

Fixing those three does more than any supplement stack. Set an earlier dinner two or three nights a week, keep alcohol genuinely occasional, and choose where you live partly on whether you can walk from it.
