Blood Testing and Biomarkers in Marbella

Spain has two parallel routes to a blood panel: the public system and a large private laboratory sector. Both are used routinely by residents; the practical differences are cost, speed and how much choice you have over the panel.

What follows is factual description, not medical advice. Ordering and interpreting tests belongs with a doctor.

Public and private pathways in Andalusia

Through the public system, an analítica is normally requested by your assigned médico de familia at your local centro de salud, taken fasted at an early appointment, and returned into your medical record. Access depends on registration and a health card, and panels are chosen clinically rather than by request.

Private laboratories and clinics sell panels directly or via a private GP. You get faster turnaround and broader panel choice, and you pay per test. Non-residents and seasonal residents typically use this route.

Standard panel versus optional add-ons

Most routine panels cover the same ground, and that ground answers most questions.

  • Usually standard: full blood count, fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid panel, liver enzymes, kidney function and electrolytes, TSH
  • Common, reasonable add-ons: ferritin and iron studies, vitamin D, vitamin B12, uric acid, hs-CRP
  • Add-ons worth discussing first: ApoB and Lp(a) for cardiovascular risk, full thyroid panel, sex hormones
  • Usually low-yield without a clinical reason: broad food-intolerance panels, unvalidated biological-age tests, wide untargeted hormone screens

Making results comparable and acting on them

Standardise the conditions: same laboratory where possible, fasted, similar time of day, no hard training or alcohol in the preceding 24 to 48 hours, and hydrated. Reference ranges differ between labs, so compare within a lab rather than across them.

Interpretation is clinical work. A single out-of-range value is often noise; a trend across two or three tests is signal. Take the results to a doctor and change one thing at a time before retesting, typically after three months.
