Testing is only useful if it changes a decision. This guide groups common measurements by what they can realistically tell you and how often they change.

Standard blood panels
Established evidence
Lipid panels, fasting glucose, HbA1c, liver and kidney function and a full blood count are the routine measures used in clinical practice. They are standardised, widely available and interpretable against reference ranges.
Because these are clinical tests, results should be reviewed with a doctor rather than self-interpreted from an app dashboard.
Body composition
Clinical research
DEXA is the common reference method for fat mass, lean mass and bone density. Bioimpedance scales are far cheaper but drift with hydration, so they are better for trend than for absolute value.
Re-testing more often than every three to six months rarely produces a signal above measurement noise.
Fitness testing
Established evidence
A laboratory VO2 max test measures maximal oxygen uptake directly. Wearable estimates are convenient but are models, not measurements, and should be treated as trend data.
A sane testing cadence
Pick the smallest set of measures that would actually change what you do. Test, give the intervention enough time to plausibly work, then re-test the same way at the same time of day.
- Annual: full clinical blood panel with a doctor
- Every 3–6 months: body composition, if you are actively changing it
- Every 3–6 months: measured or estimated cardiorespiratory fitness
