VO2 Max Testing in Marbella

VO2 max — the maximum rate at which you can take up and use oxygen — is among the strongest single predictors of all-cause mortality reported in the literature, and it is trainable at any age.

That makes it worth measuring properly at least once, and worth re-measuring the same way afterwards.

Lab test, field test or wearable estimate

A laboratory test is a graded exercise test to exhaustion on a treadmill or bike with a mask analysing expired gases. It gives a directly measured value and usually ventilatory thresholds, which is the part that actually shapes training zones.

  • Lab (CPET): most accurate, gives training thresholds, needs a sports-medicine or performance clinic
  • Field tests (Cooper 12-minute run, 1.5-mile time trial, Bruce protocol): free, repeatable, estimate rather than measure
  • Wearable estimates: convenient and directionally useful over months, poor as absolute values, and sensitive to heat and hills

Preparing so the result is comparable

Rest 24 to 48 hours beforehand, eat normally, avoid alcohol the previous day, keep caffeine consistent with what you will do next time, and use the same modality — treadmill or bike — at every retest, because values are not interchangeable between them.

In summer, do field tests early in the morning. Heat depresses performance and makes an autumn comparison meaningless.

Turning the number into training

The number itself is a benchmark; the thresholds are the plan. Most improvement comes from a large volume of easy aerobic work — conversational pace, the majority of weekly minutes — plus one or two weekly sessions of harder intervals near threshold or above.

Expect meaningful change over months, not weeks. Retest with the same protocol after 12 to 16 weeks of consistent training.
